Addis Ababa – An Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, faced an abrupt rerouting, sparking speculation about Ethiopia’s geopolitical ambitions in the Red Sea region.

Departing from Addis Ababa, the flight’s trajectory unexpectedly shifted, forcing a return to its origin as Somali aviation authorities withheld essential permissions.

Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, clarified the situation to the BBC, stating, “The aircraft en route to Hargeisa had to return due to the discovery that it lacked authorization from Somalia.”

The incident unfolded on January 17, 2024, as verified by the flight tracking website Flightradar24.

According to Flightradar data, Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET372, a routinely scheduled flight, successfully reached Hargeisa at 11:00 AM. In contrast, the de Havilland-400 aircraft, identified by flight number ET8372, originating from Addis Ababa at 8:30 AM, underwent a diversion upon reaching Jigjiga, the capital of the Somali region. The aircraft reverted to Addis Ababa’s Bole Airport at 10:30 AM.

In a subsequent communication, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority declared that Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET8372 was denied permission to land in Hargeisa.

While the CEO refrained from disclosing further details about the reversed plane and its passengers, Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daoud Aweisa, informed the BBC that the aircraft, allegedly transporting high-ranking Ethiopian government officials, was barred from entering Hargeisa.

Mesfin added that, following discussions, the obstructed aircraft, speculated to be linked to Ethiopia’s strategic interests in the Red Sea, continued its journey towards its intended destination. The incident raises questions about Ethiopia’s motives and the dynamics at play in the geopolitical landscape of the region
